Your AC kicks off mid-afternoon on a 95-degree Denver day, you go to the breaker panel, reset the switch, and the AC runs for an hour before it trips again. Sound familiar? That breaker isn’t malfunctioning — it’s doing exactly what it’s designed to do: protecting your home from a wiring or component problem that could start a fire.

After 20+ years diagnosing AC problems across Denver, Northglenn, Thornton, and Westminster, I can tell you that a breaker tripping once is often just a fluke. A breaker that trips repeatedly is always telling you something is wrong. Here’s how to read what it’s saying — and what it will cost to fix it.

If it trips repeatedly — DO NOT keep resetting it. Every time you reset and the breaker trips again, you’re running an overloaded circuit. This degrades the breaker itself and risks a wiring fire.

Is It Safe to Keep Resetting the Breaker?

This is the first question every homeowner asks, and the answer depends entirely on how many times it’s tripped. Here’s the rule of thumb I use after two decades in the field:

The One-Reset Rule

Reset the breaker once. If it trips again within the same cooling cycle, stop resetting and call a technician. If it trips a second time within 24 hours, same rule applies. You are not “helping” the system by resetting repeatedly — you are masking a fault that will cause a larger, more expensive failure.

Circuit breakers are thermal-magnetic devices. When they trip repeatedly, two things happen: the breaker itself weakens (its internal trip mechanism wears), and the wiring in your AC’s circuit is experiencing repeated over-current events that can carbonize insulation. Breakers that have been cycled many times under load often stop tripping when they should — and that’s when wiring fires start.

The underlying problem in your AC isn’t going to fix itself between resets. Every reset is a gamble, and the stakes are your compressor, your wiring, or your home’s safety.

6 Causes of AC Breaker Trips (From Most to Least Common in Denver)

Let’s go through each cause in detail — what’s happening mechanically or electrically, how to identify it, and what it will cost to repair in the Denver area.

1. Failing Capacitor

The run capacitor is a cylindrical component inside your outdoor unit that provides the electrical “push” that gets the compressor and condenser fan motor spinning at startup. When a capacitor weakens, the compressor has to fight much harder to start — drawing 3 to 5 times its normal running amperage during that startup surge.

That surge of amps is what trips the breaker. The AC may run fine for a while after reset, then trip again when it cycles on the next time. You might also notice the outdoor fan spinning slowly at startup, or your AC taking longer than usual to begin cooling.

This is the single most common cause of a tripping AC breaker in Denver. Capacitors degrade faster at altitude because of intense UV exposure and the higher temperatures inside outdoor units in attics or on south-facing walls. 2. Dirty or Blocked Condenser Coil

Your outdoor unit’s condenser coil is responsible for releasing the heat your AC pulls from inside your home. When those coil fins get clogged with dirt, cottonwood fluff, dog hair, or airborne debris, the coil can’t shed heat efficiently. The refrigerant stays hotter than it should, the compressor works harder to pump it, and the amperage draw rises until the breaker trips.

This is an especially common cause in Denver because of cottonwood season (May–June) and the dusty conditions during dry summers. A coil that’s 30% blocked can increase compressor amp draw by 20–30% — easily enough to trip a breaker during a hot afternoon when ambient temps are already pushing 95°F.

Denver cottonwood season is brutal on condenser coils. Every May, cottonwood fibers fill the coil fins like insulation. If your AC starts tripping the breaker in late spring and you haven’t had your coils cleaned recently, this is almost certainly the cause. A coil cleaning can fix the tripping problem immediately.

3. Refrigerant Leak (Low Charge)

When your AC is low on refrigerant due to a leak, the compressor has to run longer and work harder to move the smaller amount of refrigerant through the system. This extended, high-effort operation causes the compressor to overheat and draw more current than the breaker is rated for — tripping it.

You’ll often notice other symptoms alongside the tripping breaker: the system blows air that isn’t very cold, ice may form on the refrigerant lines or indoor evaporator coil, and you may hear a faint hissing near the refrigerant lines. Low refrigerant is never a “top-off” situation — the refrigerant doesn’t get used up; it leaks out. Finding and repairing the leak is mandatory, not optional.

4. Short in Wiring or Ground Fault

A wiring short occurs when damaged insulation allows two conductors to contact each other, or when a conductor touches the equipment’s metal frame (a ground fault). Either scenario causes a sudden, massive current draw that trips the breaker instantly — usually within seconds of startup, not after running for a while.

Wiring problems in outdoor units are more common than most homeowners expect. Denver’s intense UV radiation degrades plastic wire insulation significantly faster than at sea level, especially in south- or west-facing installations. Rodent damage is another common culprit — mice and squirrels chew through wire insulation inside outdoor units and the conduit runs between the house and the unit.

If the breaker trips immediately at startup — within the first 1–2 seconds — that’s a strong indicator of a short circuit or ground fault. Do not continue to reset and test. This is a fire hazard. Leave the breaker off and call us immediately.

5. Failing or Hard-Starting Compressor

The compressor is the heart of your AC — it’s a large, sealed motor that compresses refrigerant and circulates it through the system. When a compressor begins to fail (typically due to age, overheating from dirty coils, or low refrigerant over time), it draws dramatically more current at startup. This is called “hard starting” and can produce startup amp draws 3–5 times the normal operating current.

In the most severe cases — a “locked rotor” condition — the compressor motor can’t turn at all and the amp draw is essentially unlimited until the breaker trips. This usually means the compressor needs replacement.

Before assuming the worst: a “hard start kit” (also called a start capacitor or start assist) can sometimes extend a marginally hard-starting compressor’s life by 1–3 seasons while you plan for replacement. We’ll tell you honestly if this is an option for your unit.

6. Undersized or Worn-Out Breaker

Sometimes the AC itself is fine — the problem is the breaker. Over time, breakers that have tripped many times degrade internally and begin tripping at lower and lower amperage thresholds. A breaker that should handle 40 amps starts tripping at 32 amps. Your AC draws the same current it always has, but now it’s enough to trip a weakened breaker.

An undersized breaker is a separate issue — it occurs when the original installation used a breaker that wasn’t properly rated for the AC unit’s Maximum Overcurrent Protection (MOP) rating on the nameplate. This is a code violation and a common find on older Denver homes where the original breaker was downsized to “what was available.”

How to check: Look at your AC’s outdoor nameplate for “MAX FUSE” or “MAX OVERCURRENT PROTECTION” (MOP). Then look at your breaker panel for the breaker labeled for your AC. If the breaker amp rating is lower than the MOP rating, it may be undersized. If it’s significantly higher, that’s also a problem (too much protection). Call us or a licensed electrician to verify.
